Verona will steal your heart with its gorgeous architecture, rich history and culture, not to mention the pretty river that flows through the middle of this charming city in the Northern Alps of Italy.
Romeo and Juliet was set in Verona, and many love stories have unfolded there since Shakespeare’s masterpiece was penned. Verona was also featured in the writer’s famous plays, The Taming of the Shrew and Two Gentlemen of Verona, so you will see many a nod to this classic artist during your travels.
What to See in Verona
Verona, a UNESCO World Heritage site, has an abundance of museums, churches, and buildings, including the medieval and Renaissance eras. Wander over the Castel Vecchio Bridge, enjoy the sights of Arco dei Gavi and Roman architecture of the Basilica di San Zeno Maggiore then enjoy an espresso at the Piazza delle Erbe. Grab some photos of the Madonna Verona Fountain before heading back to your luxury stay for an afternoon siesta (or riposo, as they say in the North).
Make sure to stop at Juliet’s Balcony in Verona. It’s a short walk from the Roman amphitheater in the historical city center.
Many tourists bypass Verona and instead flock to Venice and Milan, which are only a few hours from Verona. Verona has all the old-world charms of the more famous cities but with a much slower pace of life. You can experience art, culture, entertainment, shopping and of course the irresistible Italian food in Verona but without the crowds. This makes Verona a gem on our map of must-visit places in Italy.
How to Savor Verona
Pizza, pasta, gelato, wine and cheese are all delicious Italian temptations you will find in Verona. With so many fine dining options, you will be looking forward to every evening, and the atmosphere and ambiance are always as impressive as the cuisine. We are quite in love with L’Oste Scuro and are sure Romeo would take Juliet on a dinner date before the opera if they lived in our modern times.
Verona is a magical place and we are sure you will be as enchanted as we are.
If you are visiting Venice, spend a few extra days exploring Verona and the surrounding area. We recommend that you combine Verona with a trip to the Lake Garda region.
Where to Stay
For a truly romantic holiday, we highly recommend staying at the 5-star Villa Cordevigo Wine Relais on the outskirts of Verona. The villa has its own private grounds, spa and wellness center, and restaurant Oselata. If you are traveling with a group, you can rent out the entire villa for extra exclusivity.
Or consider relaxing on the Verona to Paris, Venice Simplon-Orient-Express journey. This train journey takes about 2 days in a luxurious train.
